Sajda Nuriddin ’06, G’08

As an energy engineer for NORESCO, Sajda Nuriddin ’06, G’08 specializes in evaluating energy consumption in buildings and making deteriorating systems more efficient. Many of the skills Nuriddin applies today were developed during her student years performing energy audits for the Industrial Assessment Center at Syracuse University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science.

“I’m here because of the excellent mentorship I received at Syracuse, both in the classroom and through campus organizations like the National Society of Black Engineers,” Nuriddin says. “The Industrial Assessment Center itself was funded by the Department of Energy and made a great introduction to the energy engineering field. It was very easy for me to move into the industry right out of grad school.”

Nuriddin earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s in engineering management. In her current position, she conducts thermal energy load calculations, utility billing analysis, building modeling, and energy conservation measure development, along with team-oriented tasks. She says her passion for sustainability undoubtedly came from her days at Syracuse.

“Had I not been involved in the Industrial Assessment Center, I never would have been introduced to this subset of engineering. Back then, there was very little in the media about sustainability or energy conservation, and now it’s everywhere. I’m glad I took the road less traveled.”

Nuriddin is grateful for other aspects of her Syracuse University experience too. From navigating the academic and social challenges of student life, to enjoying memorable events and activities—even meeting John Legend before a concert at Schine Student Center—some of her fondest memories are from Syracuse.

Today the Atlanta resident enjoys networking and sharing her connection with other Syracuse alumni and friends.

“There’s a bond between those of us who experienced life at Syracuse, and it’s difficult to describe,” Nuriddin says. “During March Madness all my friends, family, and even coworkers know I’m rooting for the Orange, and whenever I tell someone about my school, I can’t help but be proud.”
